COMMANDER’S MESSAGE

I had a great time down at the beach!  I got to meet some Department Officers and officers and member of posts from around the state.  I attended the Legion College class for Post Commanders and learned about what I need to do here at Post 268.  We all have a lot to take care of.

Our hospitality room was a great success.  We hosted quite a few Legionnaires and friends, enjoyed some excellent food, and stayed cool with some liquid refreshments.  My thanks to the ladies of our Unit for helping out and to Joe Hughes for all the work he did.  I’m looking forward to going back next year!

On the home front, we need some members to step up to the plate and volunteer to help out around the Post.  We need a Post Home Improvement Chairman – someone to keep track of maintenance around the Post and arrange to have it done.  No actual physical labor is involved.  We need people to either form or join a brunch or dinner crew.  You don’t need to be able to cook to be on a crew – we need servers and cashiers too.  If you can help out in any way, please let any Post officer know.

If you can’t volunteer, please support our Post functions.  We try to have something for everyone – brunches, dinners, crab feasts, dances, picnics, bingo.  If there is something you would like to see us host, please let us know.

If you pay your 2011 dues by September 23, you will be an Early Bird and be able to buy tickets to our Early Bird Picnic.  It will be a great time.  Food and beverages are included in the price of the ticket and there will be music, games, and chances to win something to take home.  It is great fun for the whole family regardless of age.

Have a great summer.  If you are not already a frequent visitor, stop by the Post, say hello and enjoy the good company!

For God and Country,

Pete Lone,

Commander

CHAPLAIN’S COLUMN

The following Legionnaires are on Sick Call:

~ 'Gene' McMahon ~ Robert G. 'Bob' Williams ~

~ Joe Riciardella ~ Sol Zeidman ~ Arthur Cherpack ~

~ Armand 'Bud' Caron ~ Bob O'Neill ~

The following Legionnaires have completed their tours of duty, answered their final Roll Calls and reported to the Supreme Commander of Post Everlasting:

~ Benjamin 'Harry' McKeehan ~ Richard L. Wray ~

May their souls, and all the souls of the Faithful Departed, through the Mercy of God, rest in Eternal Peace. Amen.

A Tribute to Those Who Served – and Died

In time of war, they heeded the call.

They took up arms, “Freedom For All.”

They went to serve in a far away land.

In battles they fought, they took a stand.

In honor of our Country, their duty they performed.

For those who died, our Nation sadly mourned.

There were many who fell, and gave their lives,

Leaving behind mothers, fathers, children and wives.

They fought the fight to “Let Freedom Ring.”

In honor of them, their praises we sing.

To those who died, we salute you all.

We give our thanks, for heeding the call.

(D. Dryer)

If you know of a member who is sick, or who has passed away, kindly let me know.  If the Post or I do not get the information, that member is unvisited, or not phoned.  So please keep that in mind.  Our service personnel, especially those in Afghanistan and Iraq are constantly under fire.  Remember them in your thoughts and prayers.  May the good Lord continue to watch over and bless you and your loved ones – and our Nation.

Regards,

"Blackie" Sarkisian,

Post Chaplain (301) 758-6094 or jimsarkisian@hotmail.com

Our “Comedy Dinner/Show” is scheduled for Saturday, August 21.  The menu is “ALL YOU CAN EAT” soup and salad.  It will feature a variety of soups and our “GIANT” salad bar.  The dessert will be our “Ice Cream Sundae” bar.  This will be available from 5:00 to 6:30 PM.  The price is $6.50 per person.  The show will begin around 6:45 pm and will last about 45 minutes.  Our comedy star is “Jim Goorley.”  He is a World War II veteran and a member of Post 268.  He is 92 years old!!  His routine is titled “Dance of the Seven Veils With Six Missing.”  There will be audience participation.  Contact Chris Williard for table reservations or me for further information.

Our first Friday night dinner is September 3.  The menu is soup and salad bar, baked chicken with your choice of white or dark meat, potatoes, vegetable and dessert.  The cost is $8.50.  This is the only Friday dinner where the Unit keeps the profit.  The dinner will be downstairs in Mike Devlin Memorial Hall.  The Friday night dance will also be downstairs with music provided by Pocket Change.  Please e-mail or call me with your thoughts on this.

S.A.L. NEWS

Your S.A.L. brought home a 4-star rating certificate from the Hunt Valley convention! We are very proud of our 100% membership and are looking forward to another banner year.  Please pay your 2011 dues as soon as possible as we have lots of good deeds and fun in the works.  Get them in by September 23 and you will be able to buy tickets for the Early Bird Picnic to be held at the Forest Glen Annex of Walter Reed.  The convention was not ALL fun and games as we brought back valuable information, new friends and contacts, and a renewed spirit that the S.A.L. plays an important part in the community for all.

There will be a planning meeting for the squadron’s famous Crab Feast on Thursday, August 12, at 7 PM.  We hope to make this the most talked-about event of the season.  All members are invited to attend.  We need your input and help!

Please remember that the outside sitting area in the lower parking lot (the “veranda”) is a nice place to enjoy the outdoor weather – BUT - the area must be kept tidy.  Please deposit your papers, cigarette butts and empty cans in the proper places!  Return mugs and glasses to the bar.  Use your common sense and treat the area at least as well as you would treat your home.  Also, because of a lack of room, the committee chairmen’s office is not to be used for long-term storage.  If you donate something to the Post, please label it.  Thank you.  Please patronize the Friday night bands.  Invite some friends up for great music and very reasonably priced libations!  Remember to have your guests sign the book.

Good of the Sons: If you’d like to organize a casual cookout to benefit the Post or a good cause, see Harry.  We have a great grill and the Hall is open for rentals.  Please get the word out to your family to patronize the Sunday Bingo games as they bring revenue in to the Post.  Ella and company sell goodies at Bingo and all are invited to purchase food on Sunday evenings from her hard working team!  A big Zorro goes to Tony Horner for taking over membership card duty.  Please put your dues check (along with your phone number) in an envelope marked “S.A.L.” and deposit it in the slot in the Post Adjutant’s office door.  If paying cash, give it to the bartender and be sure to get a receipt.

The S.A.L. wishes you and your family a safe and fun summer.  We look forward to seeing you at 7 PM on Tuesday, September 7 for the start of a new S.A.L. year of greatness.  Display your flag proudly...always!

God bless this United States of America!

Jim Cavender,

S.A.L. First Vice Commander

CRIS AND LINDA’S KITCHEN

Our Friday night dinners and Saturday brunches will be starting up in September.  We have some fresh new ideas for our upcoming season.   I just know you will enjoy them.

If you would like to put together either a brunch or a dinner team, please let Linda or myself know.  You will be welcomed with open arms and we will be glad to help you assemble a team.

Chili cook-off.   Some of our members claim to make the best chili in Maryland.  We have decided to challenge them to put their skills to the test.  We planned on having the cook-off during a Redskins’ game in September, but it seems the first 1 o’clock game isn’t until October.  Therefore, we have decided to have it on a September Sunday before the game.  We’ll let you know which Sunday.

Each contestant will bring in a crock-pot of their best chili.  Cris and Linda will be the judges.  There will be a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner.

Contestants: please leave your name and phone number at the Post or email us at legionkitchencorner@yahoo.com.  More info to come.

SUPER BOWL PARTY

A friendly reminder.  If you want to stay in the pool, please get your payment in by July 1, 2010.  We would like to be able to do early planning for this event, so your response would be appreciated.  We do not like to make phone calls to chase people down.

Your prompt response will help us pull off another wonderful party.  Thank you for your participation.

Gordon Williard,

Party Planner

MEMBERSHIP

Early Bird Picnic.  We have done a lot of planning for this year’s picnic and it will surpass last year’s by a mile.  The price will be $5 for adults and $3 for children (10 and under).  For all you Korean vets, to celebrate your 60th anniversary, your admission will be $2.  Mark your calendar for Saturday, September 25, noon to 5 PM, at the Forest Glen Annex of Walter Reed.  We will have the same type of drawings we had last year.  Winners take all!  Last year’s winners each walked away with about $150.

Get your dues in as soon as possible so you can be eligible to join the fun.

‘Til next month,

Cris Crismond,

1st Vice Commander
