COMMANDERS MESSAGE

Comrades, Squadron members, and Unit members.  As you read this issue of The 268’er, you will notice that the news items, dinner menus & bands are listed for both the months of March and April.

This is because your Post has decided to follow in the footsteps of most other Legion Posts, VFW Posts and other organizations in changing to a bimonthly publication schedule.  This will take a little getting used to at first, but will be a large cost-saver in the long run.

I have noticed that more of our members and their families have been volunteering around the Post.  To name just a few: Gunner, Mark, Joe & Esther.  This is just what every Post needs – teamwork!  Thanks folks!

Coming Events: This is the time of year that we consider and elect among our members those who we want to lead our Post in the coming years.   Those running for office should be sincere and dedicated.  All offices take time and work.  Nominations will be open at both of our Post meetings in March and April as well as at the Executive Committee meeting in May.  Election of officers will take place on Tuesday, May 27.

Change your clocks on Sunday, March 9.  Confused?  Just remember the verse “Spring forward - fall back.”

There will be a St. Patrick’s Day Dinner & Dance on Monday, March 17.  The ticket price is $13 per person (same as last few years).  The menu will feature corned beef & cabbage and all the trimmings.  Help is always appreciated.

The only days the Post is scheduled to be  closed are Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter Sunday.  So yes, the Post will be closed Easter Sunday, April 27

For God and Country,,

See you at the Post

Bob Allen,

AUXILIARY NEWS

The Unit held a memorial service for Gladys Abel in January at Collins Funeral Home. May she rest in peace.

In spite of the weather, we held our Sweetheart Dinner/Dance in February.  Thanks to all who attended and all who worked so hard to make it a fun-filled evening.

At our April 15 meeting, we will initiate new members.  If you have not been sworn in, please come and receive your Auxiliary pin.

Nominations and elections of officers for next year is just around the corner – so please think about stepping up and running for an office.  If you are interested, please call Helen Storer (301 460-3864) or yours truly.

Please start toting up your volunteer hours so that Helen can start her reports. She needs your totals by 21 April.

If you have any PJs for Casey Cares, please bring them in.  I will deliver them in April, which is Children and Youth Month.

On Saturday, May 17, we will hold our annual Poppy Dinner to honor all veterans and the Four Chaplains.  We have not settled on a menu, but we can promise you a large salad bar, baked potato bar and dessert. There will be two entrees.  The fee will be $11 and dinner will be at approximately 6 PM.  A program will follow the dinner.

If you know anyone who is ill, please let Chaplain Christine know.  You can call her (301 649-2709) or email her (Chris1939@verizon.net).  Be sure to stop by and see her at our First Friday Bake Sale.

Our next two meetings are Tuesday, 18 March and 15 April, at 7 PM.

Remember all of our service personnel in your prayers.  If you see a vet – Thank a vet!

Cathy Williams,
Unit President  301 649-3266

S.A.L. NEWS

Sign of the times: The newsletter is going bimonthly.  This saves the Post printing and postage costs.  With that said, your newsletter will be as current as possible when written, but you will now need to actually visit the Post for information on events, menus and breaking news more often, as it will be posted on the wall as a flyer.  You can also call the Post if needed.  So we have to plan ahead and that is what this column is about.  Get ready for the April S.A.L. 100 Club dinner that will feature a delicious smoked ham and seared dinner with all the trimmings and big chances to win on Saturday, April 12, from 4 to 7 PM, all for $30 - and that admits two.  Best deal in town.  Get tickets from a bartender today!  We will need help, please see Commander Harry to donate some time to a great annual event!!

We really need your cooperation in the dues department. This is getting real old for me.  I’m getting notices from our Adjutant because folks who are from other Posts are paying, have not paid dues for years and now want to pay and resume status or want to join and have no DD214 or do not pay at all, etc., etc.  You men need to either get with the plan and be responsible for your membership at Post 268 or find another Post. It’s as simple as that.  You pay your light bill, pay your dues on time, and get YOUR 2014 card.  Reminder signs are up and bartenders are instructed to check your status.  Please step up and pay your doggone $20 and get a receipt today!  Thank you.

Food wise: The S.A.L. brunches are on deck for the last Saturday of the month.  Please patronize all brunches!

Good of Sons: I am very disappointed that the S.A.L. did not reach a quorum for our February business meeting.  Yep, only 7 when we needed 8.  That is also a shame considering we have 170 members.  The first Tuesday of every month (except July and August), we have a meeting at 7 PM.  Meetings are short and sweet, but important.  Do not forget to clean out your closets and donate to the Unit clothing drive this cold season to help veterans and the community.  Donations of food, clothing or sundries are always welcome.  Please package in clearly marked bags.  Come up and ask what you as a member can do to help your Post continue its missions.  If you work, I trust you have some talent in your profession.  Your participation would be most appreciated and you get that back because we are successful, simple.  Hats off and a salute to our own Mike Williams, who will be cutting back his Legion hours.  Mike will continue to be here for special events.  Now is the time you should roll up your sleeves and help, just as Mike has for years.  It is only natural that you become more involved if you want the Post to continue to strive to meet its goals.  See Harry or myself on details.  We need to keep the Mike Devlin Memorial Hall rented.  You can also be a Post rental diplomat by getting the word out to family, friends and co-workers that hall rental rates are extremely reasonable.  There will be a St. Patrick’s Day celebration in some form; please check the wall flyers and strut your green!

March winds, April showers, thick and thin, like the Postman, your S.A.L. is here to help, listen, and do, and we want YOU to be a part of that.  We pray for resolution of conflicts overseas.  Have you hugged a veteran?  He or she has given their all to keep US (as in United States) safe and alive in a democratic society, where you as a citizen have lots of freedom to help others.  Fly your flag and God Bless America!  See you ‘round YOUR Post.

Jim Cavender,

S.A.L. Vice Commander

KITCHEN CORNER

March 4 is Shrove Tuesday.  We will be serving Pancakes at 5:00.  The cost is $4.50 for all-you-can-eat pancakes and a one order of bacon or sausage.  You may purchase extra orders of bacon or sausage.  Everyone is welcome!

St. Patrick’s Day will be celebrated, of course, on March 17.  There will be hats, noisemakers, music and a wonderful corned beef dinner.  I haven't been involved with this function for several years, so purchase your tickets early and we will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day together.  If you have any questions, please contact me.  For table reservations, please contact Chris Williard (301/649-2709).

Beginning in March, there are changes to the food program.  Please contact the Post (301/946-3268) to verify the Monday menus.  I will try to have some sort of food each Monday, but there might be a change from what is on the calendar.  Please continue to support our Monday food program.  If you are interested in preparing food one Monday night a month, please contact me.  Thank you in advance!

Again, if you have any suggestions, please contact me at lindasarkisian@yahoo.com or call me (301/602-5276).

Linda Sarkisian,

Post 268 Food Chairman

A FOND GOODBYE

I set down to write this with feelings of both regret and relief – regret that I will no longer be quite as “in the loop” as I have been for many years, and relief that I will not have a deadline to stare down every month.

I have edited The 268’er since July of 2004, a span that encompassed eight Post administrations and five different Post Commanders.  For the most part, I have thoroughly enjoyed the task.  This is due in large part to the fact that, other than the standard content (officers’ and chairmen’s columns), I have felt free to determine the variable content of the newsletter.  I have also felt free to edit submissions to correct grammatical and other errors.

Recently, the Post officers decided to switch from a monthly to a bimonthly format.  I feel that this is a step in the wrong direction.  There are other means to save on printing and postage.  The most obvious would be to make more use of electronic distribution.

I also take exception to a Past Post Commander’s attempt to control the content of the newsletter and a Past Unit Commander’s demand that I publish items without attribution.

For the reasons stated above, I am resigning my position as editor of The 268’er.  It has been my pleasure to serve you.  I wish my successor the very best.  To all my readers, thank you for your patronage and I hope none of your names show up in the Chaplain’s Column any time in the near future.

Honorary Life Member, Wheaton AL Post 268

Sick Call: ~ Dave Rogerson,  ~ Leon Amaducci ~ Jim Haga ~

We have had no reports of Comrades answering their final roll call.

For those who we don't know about, may their souls, and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in eternal peace.  Amen.

**DANNY**

Oh Danny Boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling

From glen to glen, and down the mountainside.

The summer's gone and all the roses falling,

“It’s you, 'It’s you must go and I must bide!

But come ye back when summer's in the meadow,

Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow,

It’s I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow,

Oh Danny Boy, oh Danny Boy, I love you so!

But when ye come, and all the flowers are dying,

If I am dead, as dead I well may be,

Ye'll come and find the place where I am lying,

And kneel and say an Ave there for me.

And I shall hear, though soft you tread above me,

And all my grave will warmer, sweeter be,

For you will bend and tell me that you love me,

And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me!

If you know of anyone who is ill or in the hospital, please contact Commander Bob (301/460-4646/301/318-9100) or contact Adjutant Sandy Henderson Smith (301/946-6907).  Please report the death of a member to them also.

God Bless our country and all our Veterans and their families.
