COMMANDER’S NOTE

POST EVERLASTING: This is a very touching ceremony for our deceased members.  It will be held at the beginning of the business meeting on Tuesday, February 28.  If you can spare an hour, please come and pay homage to those members who have transferred to Post Everlasting during the past year.  There will be refreshments following the ceremony.

RENOVATIONS: If my plans all came true, we are now enjoying our newly redecorated hall and our refurbished bar upstairs.  If not, hopefully it will happen soon.

KARAOKE: We have Karaoke on Saturday, February 11, and Friday, February 24.  Instead of singing in the shower, come on down to the Post and show off your vocal skills.  New voices are always welcome.

VOLUNTEERS: Last month, I mentioned volunteers.  I knew I would forget someone and of course I did.  Big thanks to Diana Hampton and Billy Greenwood.  Without their help, I would still be in the restrooms painting and trying to finish up.  You did a great job!

268’ER: If some of you did not receive your newsletter until late last month, please bear with us.  We have a new printer and hopefully the snags will be ironed out by the time you are reading this.

MEMBERSHIP: I need your help again. You know my goal is 100%.  Seems we are coming up a little short.  If you know someone who has not paid his or her dues, have them come in and get caught up.

FOOD PROGAMS: Our food programs do our members a great service.  I don’t know where you can go to get a great meal, entertainment and see friends for such a low cost.  It can’t be done.  So check your newsletter for upcoming events and all we have to offer.  You won’t be disappointed.

HALL RENTAL: If you know anyone who might be scheduling an upcoming event, please recommend our Mike Devlon Memorial Hall.  We really need to start renting more often.  Thanks for your support.

“Cris” Crismond,

Commander, Post 268

   POST EVERLASTING

Please join us on Tuesday, February 28, to pay homage to our comrades who passed during the last year.

The ceremony begins at 7:30 and will be followed by a light repast.

CHAPLAIN'S COLUMN

The following Comrades are on sick call:

~ Olaf Blorstad ~ 'Manny' Martin ~

The following Comrade has answered his final roll call, completed his tour of duty and has reported to the Supreme Commander of Post Everlasting:

~  Mike Ogurchak ~

May his soul, and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in eternal peace.  Amen.

A Prayer For All Of Us

O Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, - pardon;
Where there is doubt, - faith;
Where there is despair, - hope;
Where there is darkness, - light;
Where there is sadness, - joy;

O Lord, grant that I may not so much:
Seek to be consoled - as to console.
To be understood - as to understand.
To be loved - as to love.

It is in giving, that we receive
It is in pardoning, that we are pardoned.
It is in death, that we are born to eternal life.
Amen.

At this month’s business meeting (February 28 at 7:30 PM), we will conduct the solemn rite of Post Everlasting.  Every year, at our February meeting, we remember our Comrades who have passed away during the previous year.  Attendance has been disappointing the last few years.  These are our Comrades, relatives, neighbors and friends, but more importantly, our bond to them is - WE ARE VETERANS, as they were.  Please mark your calendar, and make it a point to attend this meaningful memorial service.  It lasts just about 25 minutes.

May the Good Lord continue to watch over and bless you and your loved ones, and our Nation.

Regards, and stay safe,

"Blackie" Sarkisian,

Post Chaplain   (301) 758-6094   jimsarkisian@hotmail.com

AUXILIARY NEWS

It is with deep regret that Unit 268 mourns the passing of member Geraldine (Jerry) Polito.  May her soul rest in peace.

At the beginning of the Unit’s business meeting on February 21, we will remember those Unit members who passed away in 2011.  The program will begin at 7:00 PM.  It is open to all and we encourage everyone to attend.  All family members and friends have been invited.  Refreshments will be served after the program.  We will then continue with the meeting.  Please contact Chaplain Chris or myself if you have questions.

When you think of February, the first thing that comes to mind is our annual Sweetheart Dinner Dance.  The date this year is February 11.  Dinner will be served from 5:30 to 7:30 PM.  The entrée is stuffed chicken breast.  The cost of the dinner is $11, which includes our giant salad bar, soup and dessert bar.  Salad bar, soup and dessert bar only will be $7.  There will be door prizes and raffles during the dinner.  The dance will begin at 8:00 PM.  There is a charge for the dance only.  This helps us defray the cost of the band.  A cash bar will be available.  A new “Sweetheart King and Queen” will be crowned and we will honor those who have been married the longest (actually we honor all married couples)!!  Please contact Chris Williard (301 649-2709) for dinner table reservations.  Contact me with questions.  I have enjoyed planning this special dinner/dance for many years and I would like this to be the best ever!

Members, if you haven't yet renewed your dues for 2012, you are now delinquent.  If you did renew and have not received your membership card, please contact me.

Our coupon and box-top box has been moved to the back room.  Please place your coupons there.  We usually have pages of coupons to be cut and counted.  You can also pick those up in the back room.  Thanks to all who help with this important program.

Our Third Monday Dinner will be on February 20.  The menu is salad and baked meat ziti.  The cost: $6.00.  The time: 5:30 to 8:00 PM.  Please remember our First Friday Bake Sale on February 3.  We always need homemade baked goods.

Chaplain Chris reminds all of you to contact her if you know of any member who is ill or in the hospital.   Please  e-mail her at chris1939@verizon.net or call her at 301 649-2709.  Each week, Chris sends out an e-mail giving details of lunches, dinners, brunches and special events for the week.  If you are not on her list, e-mail her, she will add you to the list.

God Bless our Veterans, our Country and God Bless our “LEGION FAMILY”!!

Linda Sarkisian,

Auxiliary President         301 949-0641    lindasarkisian@yahoo.com

S.A.L. NEWS

Tony Horner reports that we have over 70% paid up.  Save us the postage for late January reminder notices and please get your annual 2012 dues in today.  Twenty dollars, once and done.  Also, why not sign up a new member this year.  See Harry for eligibility details.

So far we have dodged the major snows this winter!  Too bad for the snow removal companies, but after the past two winters, I really do not miss it!  Plus the money saved on clearing roads can go for things you can see - like landscaping and asphalt sealer in the spring!

Tony Horner reports over 78% paid up for 2012.  Please save us the postage and get your annual dues in today.  Twenty dollars, once and done.  Also, why not sign up a new member this coming year.  See Harry for eligibility details.

Second Saturday S.A.L. Brunches are under way.  If you can help in any way, see Jim C or Harry.

Get out your calendar and mark down Saturday, April 21, from 3 to 6 PM, as your S.A.L. presents the BIG 100 Club dinner.  Here you will find a chef-inspired dinner with all the trimmings, delicious appetizers, open bar plus lots of prizes and surprises that the S.A.L. “professional” 100 folks are known to fashion!  All this for only $25, and that admits two!  What a great DEAL!  The event is open to you, your neighbors and Post friends.  Proceeds go right back to your community.  This event is always tons of fun and you will be amazed with the Mike Devlin Memorial Hall remodel.  It is a new experience you are certain to enjoy.  This is always a sell out.  Tickets will go on sale soon.

Remind your friends and neighbors that our new hall is available for rental events.  Have interested folks contact Blackie at 301-758-6094.

Our condolences go out to Bill Sessums and his family on his father’s passing.  Mr. Sessums senior was always a friendly face at our Post and will be greatly missed.

As Sunday afternoon NASCAR returns, Tommy Thompson will organize race day share-a-dish lunches.  See Tommy if you can help.  Please watch the bulletin boards for specific races, dates and times.

The Post offers spiritual nurturing as well as information on federal services that can be of assistance to our folks in uniform.   If you meet a veteran please invite them up to our Post.

The Post can use your talents.  Please lend a hand where and when you can.

Next meeting Tuesday. February 7.  Be safe, see you then.

God Bless America!

Jim Cavender,
S.A.L. Commander

The entree will be stuffed chicken breast

NEWS FROM THE KITCHEN

There is a change in our weekly food program.  There will be a spaghetti dinner on the second Wednesday of each month.  There will not be a dinner on the other Wednesdays until further notice.  This is because the pool players changed their schedule.  Remember, there are always sandwiches and other offerings at the bar.  Mike and Cathy Williams have been preparing Wednesday night food for many years and we do thank them.  Please support their second Wednesday spaghetti dinner.  The Monday dinners are continuing as usual.

As you walk into the Post home, check out our new menu board.  It will list the food menus for the week along with special events.  The Food Committee thanks SAL Commander Jim Cavender, who did all the research in obtaining this board.  Thanks Jim!

Please contact me if you have any questions or would like to help with the food program.

Thank you!

Linda Sarkisian,

Post Food Chairman
